Ubisoft announced that it has purchased the rights to the "Tom Clancy" name for use in video games and ancillary products which include related books, movies and merchandising.

The Ubisoft Tom Clancy deal was a complete cash transaction, free of any future royalities, but did not disclose the financial amount of the acquisition.

Under the terms of the deal, the publisher will have the right to attach the series name to future video games, books based on those games, movies based on those games and any resulting merchandise.

However, the exclusive deal doesn't include exclusive rights to the official name for past catalog of books, the rights to which are shared among several parties. In addition, the terms of the exclusive deal does not include rights to books or films set in the Rainbow Six universe, which remain with another, undisclosed party.

The Paris-based publisher has had great success under the brand name for video games. The original Rainbow Six: Vegas sold just under 2 million copies, and the recently released sequel has earned critical praise in addition to brisk sales numbers.

CEO Yves Guillemot also mentioned that the international company is now pursuing the creative idea of creating a massively multiplayer online game set within the game series universe.
