Microsoft Corp said the new Internet Explorer Mobile will be available for IE mobile compatible cell phones by the third quarter of this year.

The announcement follows the Apple iPhone which has won praises for its Web site browser capabilities. Apple uses its own Safari Web browser for its iPhone.

The software giant has been gaining steady ground with its operating system for smart phones with computer-like features such as e-mail.

IE Mobile will be available to phone makers in the third quarter with the first mobile cell phones to go on sale by year end.

The company has been gaining steady ground with its operating system for smart phones with computer-like features such as e-mail, but it faces stiff competition from the likes of Apple, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion and Palm Inc.

Microsoft said it expects license sales of its mobile operating system to outpace smart phone market growth in the next few years.
